Homemade Hummus

When families start attending Sunday Suppers, they are a bit skeptical about this unfamiliar dip (usually served with carrots). But in short order they are requesting it more and making it at home. It's easy and affordable - two hallmarks of any Sunday Suppers recipe.


  • 1 (15-ounce) can garbanzo beans/chickpeas (drained, reserve liquid)
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice (1 large lemon)
  • 1/4 cup tahini
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Dash ground paprika for serving


  1. In bowl of a food processor, combine tahini and lemon juice; process for 1 minute.
  2. Add olive oil, garlic, cumin, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt; process for 30 seconds
  3. Add half of the chickpeas; process for 1 minute then scrape sides and bottom of the bowl.
  4. Add remaining chickpeas and process until smooth
  5. Add reserved liquid one tablespoon at a time until it reaches the desired consistency.
  6. Adjust seasoning (salt & pepper).
  7. Serve hummus with a drizzle of olive oil and dash of paprika
