Dorca is a single mom of two; Emma, 12 and Ramon, 13, living in Norris Square. They describe themselves as a pretty active family, enjoying sports, Zumba, working out and exploring the city for fun activities to do together. They heard about SS from a neighbor and have been a part of SS since February 2012. When asked what impact SS has had on her family, Dorca said, “Sunday Suppers is our family day and it’s been a good experience, we’ve even referred other families.” It has helped her family to be more thoughtful about what they eat and they enjoy eating together, regularly. “We know these small changes are helping us, we want to live longer; we’ve even lost weight.”
We ask the families to try everything on their plates at SS; just because it’s different it doesn’t mean it tastes bad. Something new Dorca and her family tasted and discovered they enjoyed is Baba Ghanoush (roasted eggplant dip). Emma liked trying cherry tomatoes in the salads and pita chips. A favorite meal for Dorca was stuffed peppers, Ramon loved the healthier macaroni & cheese, and Emma, well, she likes everything! “But, I really liked the ice cream cone cannolis & the fruit kabobs for dessert.”
Dorca, Emma and Ramon are regular volunteers, they understand the gift of giving back when they make time to serve others. They join the other families on our monthly day-trips to volunteer at SHARE Food Program. “We enjoy it,” said Dorca, “it’s a lot of fun & it keeps us busy!” Emma shared that she feels proud helping others in need.
This summer, they participated in our community garden project as a family. Dorca played a big role in planning, planting, tending to, and harvesting our plots. When we asked what that experience was like for them, in an instant Emma said, “I liked it a lot! We learned how to grow our own food, in our own garden, in our own neighborhood!”
